February and March were very busy at Horizons Kindergarten. We had a lot of festivities we celebrated and we had a lot of fun while doing it :)

We were very happy we got to celebrate our friendship, party a bit and make delicious pizza among many new adventures we encountered both indoors and outdoors.

FEBRUARY

Friends Day

Introducing friends day to children was interesting since each of them has different stories shared to the group with regards to their friends.

During the discussion, we talked how friends act and behave. They hug one another showing that each of them is unique and special. After the discussion, we formed a circle with children holding hands and we sang a song Ten Little Friends.

They were reminded to take care of their friends not only this day but every day when they are together. As an artwork regarding their friendship, each child contributed a handprint that formed a circle on a coloured cardboard that has a heart designed in the middle that shows their love with one another. Children took the artwork home as a remembrance of their unbreakable friendship.

Send a Card to a Friend Day

While we celebrated Friends day we remembered some of our friends that no longer go to kindergarten but have started school but also some friends that moved away. As we spoke of where they are today we thought of our new friends in partner schools.

We made cards for all of them.

Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is one of the most popular festivities in February and we had an opportunity to observe everywhere around us. In kindergarten we tried to discover what is love and how do we know we love someone. We also made some artwork.

Innovation Day

We explored some of the innovations that we encounter in our everyday living and. In fact they have become unavoidable so we made our own too.

International Mother Language Day

We also made audio recordings of children speaking in their own mother language for them to explore and play with.

Carnival Day – our favorite festivity for everybody likes to dance and wear masks

Making pizza

We prepared by washing hands and putting the oven to heat.

We stretched the dough and explored the ingredients we put on as toppings.

We baked the pizza and watched the process.

Finally when it was baked we ate it.

MARCH

Math Day

Here at Horizons we also believe the math can be fun. That math should be fun and no one should fear it. That is why we celebrated Math Day.

Children were adding and matching numbers using straws, raisins, macaroni, corn, beans and etc. With straws, they were not only counting it but they named/identified colours.

Plant a Flower Day

We love nature around us and we are always very curious as to the changes that occur. Plant a flower day was a perfect opportunity for us to explore the soil and seeds. We planted the flower seeds and watered them. We will observer how they grow and connect this day with our April topics of spring and nature around us.

St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day festivity is one of our most beloved festivities and one of the oldest ones we've been celebrating at Horizons.

As an English speaking kindergarten one more reason why we love St. Patrick's Day is because we explore Irish English and discover more about the language we use every day.

Apart from reading from “A Child's Treasury of Irish Rhymes” we love exploring Irish myths and legend. Children are in particular fond of Leprechauns and the stories of the pot of gold hidden at the end of the rainbow.

Let's Laugh Day

At Horizons we believe laughing and childhood go hand in hand. That is why celebrating a day such as Let's Laugh Day is a very special treat. We take out our fuzzy tickle monster gloves and play various tickling games. Each time we try to think of a new game with a few basic rules. Those are:

  1. We should try and move as much as possible

  2. Always make sure you know who is playing

  3. If someone asks you to stop please stop

  4. Be creative/innovative.

World Storytelling Day

Storytelling is as old as the ability to speak is. It is the way traditions are handed down from generation to generation and it is important to nurture that ability.

At Horizons, after breakfast, we start our day with the morning circle. One of the reasons we hold the morning circle is not just for show-and-tell where children introduce the toy they bring from home. We hold the morning circle because it enables every child an equal opportunity to tell a story of their choosing and to hear a story from their friends or teacher.

For the World Storytelling Day we decided to tell a story that we will all make together. As we sit in our circle one child would start the story and the one next to him/her would continue. The process was to repeat until the story comes full circle or is finished.

World Down Syndrome Day

Last school year a family from Sweden introduced to us their custom of wearing mismatched socks as a symbol of support for people with Down Syndrome. They explained that the message sent with that act is that “Different is Ok”. That is why we always try to sensitize our children to be open and supportive as they perceive the world and individuals around them. We explore our differences and strengthen our friendships.

Making a card with a designed x and heart

World Water Day

Water is very important for our lives. That is why we explored about it even more.

Children showed a great interest in prior knowledge regarding water and its significance in every day life. They were very interested in the aspect of water movement and the sound it makes

Brother's and Sisters Day

Getting a sibling is a very big change in a life of every child. That is why we always like to encourage children to share their experiences. We also love to encourage children to be each others big brother or sister and to help each other out.

Children made a special card through colouring a heart and handprint flower

Festival of Lights Zagreb

This month we had a special event to which we have been invited.

Parents from a child attending the kindergarten were organizing a festival in our lovely city of Zagreb and they have invited us to join them at the opening day.

Children, parents and teachers were given a first had tour through all the festival attractions and at the same time given an opportunity to socialize outside kindergarten.

World Theatre Day

We at Horizons love to explore theatre and we always encourage children to dramatic expression.

As a part of the World Theatre day we explored and played in a lot of different ways.

We had a story of “Snow white and the Eco-Disaster Dwarves”

Children also presented their own stories and shows

Eiffel Tower Day

We celebrated Eiffel Tower Day on 31st, March. We had Mrs. Haine visiting the kindergarten, who held a presentation about Eiffel Tower. We talked about the Tower, when it was built and who built it. What it was made of and what was its use then and now. We actively engaged talking about our experiences and watched a few interesting videos. We explored a 3D puzzle/model of The Eiffel Tower. We made artwork creating Eiffel Tower with buttons.
